ISO 17160 (BDS EN 17160:2019) Rules for determining product categories for ceramic tiles

ISO 17160

This document defines the rules for determining product categories (PCR) by providing guidelines and rules for the preparation of a Type III Environmental Declaration (EPD) for ceramic tiles produced by extrusion and dry pressing, which are mainly used for interior and/or exterior flooring and wall and fa?ade cladding.
These PCRs specify the rules for the calculation, in accordance with EN 15804:2012+A1:2013, of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of ceramic tiles for the preparation of EPDs, as well as the requirements based on the LCA.
These PCRs:
- determine the parameters to be declared and the way they are collected and recorded;
- describe which stages of the life cycle of ceramic tiles are taken into account in the EPD and which processes should be included in the life cycle stages; - determine a rule for the development of the conditions;
- include rules for the calculation of the life cycle inventory and the life-cycle impact assessment that underpin the EPD, including a data quality specification to be applied;
- include pre-logging, environmental and health information rules not covered by the LCA for ceramic tiles, fabrication process and construction services where necessary;
- determine the conditions under which ceramic tiles can be compared based on the information provided by the EPD.
The EPD exhausted using these PCRs contains data from the product stages (A1 to A3). The manufacturer, optionally, may include all modules of the stages of the product life cycle (manufacturing process, use and end of use) (A4 to C4) using the conditions described in 7.3 when primary data are not available. The results of these stages are displayed separately (without being added together).
Therefore, these PCRs cover:
- EPD from the beginning of development to the end of use (only the product stage is considered);
- EPD from the beginning of development to the end of use (the entire life cycle of ceramic tiles is considered). Module D can be included in this type of EPD.
The EPD is valid after verification, for a period of 5 years from the date of issue, after which it is reviewed and verified.
